A historical landmark is reborn as Arding & Hobbs reaches practical completion

Project news

Once a much-loved retail landmark, Arding & Hobbs’ civic presence had been eroded away by unsympathetic additions and failing tenants. exigere is proud to have supported a world-class team – W.RE, Stiff + Trevillion, B&CO, NDY and AKT II – to return this listed building back to its former glory whilst creating a new blueprint for contemporary mixed-use developments.

Clapham Junction's iconic Arding & Hobbs building – which has undergone a sympathetic transformation from a grade II listed former department store to a contemporary mix of retail and workspace – has reached practical completion.

This significant milestone marks the final hurdle before the transformed space welcomes its first residents and businesses.

Spanning 97,000 sq ft over seven floors, Stiff + Trevillion's reimagination of this icon celebrates its unique history whilst equipping its tenants for modern-day work, rest and play. The redevelopment of the site involved repairs to the existing structure and partial demolition of some internal structural elements to refurbish and develop the space. A new two-storey CLT and GLULAM extension offers best-in-class office space providing vistas across central London from the newly created roof terrace amenity space.

Its remarkable brick and stone facade, along with the heritage timber windows, were meticulously restored, preserving their original character. The renowned cupola tower also received a complete restoration, ensuring its continued presence as a landmark. Modernisation, carefully integrated, will unlock the building's full potential while safeguarding its unique historical narrative.

Situated in the heart of Clapham Junction, Arding & Hobbs benefits from the energy of a town-centre location, minutes from the epicentre of one of the world’s great metropolises.
